9 Tips for Your First Week With Invisalign
Practical tips from our orthodontists to make your first week of Invisalign comfortable — from managing soreness to cleaning aligners and building a wear routine.

Expect pressure — it’s a good sign
Most patients feel snugness for two or three days after starting a new set. Switching to a new aligner at bedtime lets you sleep through the most noticeable pressure. Cool water and soft foods help, and an over-the-counter pain reliever is fine if needed.
Build a wear routine
Aligners only work when they are in your mouth. Aim for 20–22 hours a day and remove them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush. A phone reminder after meals is the easiest way to stay consistent during week one.
Always keep your case with you. Wrapping aligners in a napkin is the number one way they get thrown away at restaurants.
Keep teeth and aligners clean
Brush and floss before putting aligners back in so food and sugar aren’t trapped against your teeth. Rinse aligners whenever you remove them and gently brush them with cool water — hot water can warp the plastic.
Practice speaking
A slight lisp is common for the first day or two. Reading out loud or singing along in the car helps your tongue adapt quickly. Most people sound completely normal within a few days.
